Writing Tutor: available in Los Gatos, Saratoga and Santa Cruz * I tutor local & international middle school, high school & college students in spoken & written English, with an emphasis on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar, tense and plurality usage, and other skills. My emphasis is guiding students to produce well-written essays for their English, History, Econ and other courses requiring excellent writing. I also tutor Elementary School students in reading comprehension, English, History, essay writing, research papers, and creative writing. As a "WriteMentor" tutor at UCSC, I coached students in thesis development, research skills, and essay composition. My tutees were primarily transfer students who needed extra support in the transition from Community College level writing to that required at the University. I emphasized the need for 'close reading' and note-taking of their texts and resources in order to enhance comprehension, how to craft a strong argument and choose the most persuasive references. *As a "Writing Project Assistant" with Young Writers (of Santa Cruz Writes) I help public school students write personal narratives, and thoughtful essays. EXAM PREPARATION TOEFL * I coach International Students preparing for the TOEFL Exam, with specific strategies for the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing exam sections, utilizing TOEFL texts and software. PSAT & SAT * My specialty is the Verbal section of the exam, which includes Reading Comprehension and Writing skills questions. I emphasize vocabulary by studying prefixes, suffixes and root words, using standard SAT vocab lists, but also generating their own personal vocabulary lists from challenging reading passages, and build their memory through reviewing. Students deepen their reading comprehension by practicing careful reading of sentences and passages in order to deduce the inherent logic and be able to solve the questions posed. Through these strategies, my students' competence and confidence increases. I meet with students in person, or via Skype. College Application Essay Mentor: I offer support to students composing their college application personal statement essays, through generating ideas together and crafting a well thought-out essay, or just editing an almost-there essay. Editing Services: I offer excellent organizational, proofreading and editing services to BA candidates completing their Senior project, and Graduate students polishing their Master's thesis. I enjoy sharing my love of learning with students. My emphasis as a tutor is in the study of English, writing and literature. However, I am widely read in the humanities, social and natural sciences and, as well, have a background in health sciences. Therefore, I'm available to tutor reading comprehension and essay-writing skills for a variety of subjects.
