EducationPost-doc Organic Chemistry, University of Chicago
Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley
B.S. Chemistry, University of Notre Dame (IN)
ExperienceIn addition to private tutoring, I have held several chemistry teaching positions:
- GSI (teaching assistant) at UC Berkeley for Chem 3A/B (sophomore organic chemistry)
- GSI for graduate-level organic synthesis
- TA for analytical chemistry
- Lab instructor for general chemistry
What makes organic chemistry so difficult is the number of different types of concepts that are covered in such a short time. These concepts build on each other, so it's important to have a good understanding of each concept as the course progresses. Some of the common topics that I cover:
- Electronic structure and bonding
- Drawing compounds
- Resonance structures
- Thermodynamics, kinetics, and energy diagrams
- Functional groups
- Drawing arrow pushing mechanisms (e.g. radical reactions, SN1, SN2, E1, E2, reactions of carbonyls, etc.)
- Recognizing reaction types
- Predicting products
- Retrosynthesis and synthetic planning
- Biomolecules (e.g. carbohydrates and peptides)
- Lab techniques
- Spectroscopy and structure elucidation
Face-to-face tutoring is the best, but I also offer online sessions for people with full schedules or limited transportation. Email me for more info!
HobbiesAs a transplant from the east coast, I am interested in exploring the Bay Area and finding as many 'art cars' as possible in the area. I'm a big sports fan, especially baseball and college football.

Many many praises to Jeremy as he played a pivotal role in not only improving my performance in my organic chemistry course, but also in increasing my confidence and attitude in the way I tackle challenging topics and problems. Jeremy definitely went far above my expectations of a tutor. After struggling immensely from the first section, out of two, of organic chemistry, hope was bleak that I would have any chance of doing any better in the following semester. After meeting with Jeremy for just a few sessions, I could already see what understanding and grasping a topic really meant. Jeremy is very patient and detail-oriented and will take you step-by-step through every concept. His clarity in explanation and frequent checking up on your understanding through asking questions make even the hardest of concepts possible to grasp. Jeremy tailors each meeting to your progress and areas of weakness and ensures that every idea is understood as best as possible. His personable and friendly persona provide for a comfortable setting in which no question is frowned upon or seen as senseless. In addition to his exceptional teaching strategies, it is clear that Jeremy has extreme passion for organic chemistry as well as the intelligence to match. Thus, this allows him to be able to explain topics in multiple ways in the chance that certain topics are especially difficult for you to grasp. Jeremy is also very understanding and his flexibility was a pivotal reason why I was able to meet with him every week and keep up with the material learned in class. His genuine concern for the student's understanding and performance is evident and I would recommend Jeremy to anyone seeking help in organic chemistry! -Emily
Jeremy is a great tutor! He helped me with Organic Chemistry and was able to explain and break down hard concepts into easier bits of information. He knows if you're not confident with a concept and will explain that topic multiple ways and go through different examples until you understand it. Jeremy's hours are very flexible and you can always email him questions and expect a timely response - very helpful!
I cannot praise Jeremy's tutoring abilities enough! After I failed my second Organic Chemistry I (CHEM X36A) midterm, I frantically found Jeremy and worked once a week with him for the rest of the semester and pulled off a B minus as my final grade. I could not believe he helped bring me back from what would have certainly been a terrible grade. I stayed with him the entire next semester for Organic Chemistry II and ended up with a final grade of an A minus. His explanations are concise and he will diligently re-explain concepts until he finds a way that I can grasp. And there is no fooling Jeremy- he has the ability to hone-in on tough material and review it until it is mastered. Whenever I was "shaky" on a topic, he would politely call me out, and find other ways to teach it. It is obvious that he very comfortable with the material and it is very helpful that he brings real-life applications of difficult concepts in order to better illustrate topics. But perhaps his best unsung quality is his unique ability to give the student more confidence. I was a very nervous ochem student when I first met Jeremy and I was terrified I was not smart enough to get through the class, but by the end, I really felt like I had a solid understanding of concepts that I never thought I would be able to master. I am so proud of myself for my organic chemistry achievements and without Jeremy, I do not think it would have been possible.
Jeremy tutored me for both Chem 3A (Fall 2013) and Chem 3B (Spring 2014). I would HIGHLY recommend Jeremy if you are considering getting a tutor for either of these courses. As you would expect with any tutor, Jeremy has an incredible understanding of all of the material covered in these courses but what sets him apart is how he is able to explain concepts with incredible clarity and never makes you feel inadequate or frustrated when you don't understand a problem/concept, etc because he's a really cool, laid back guy! spent two hours working on chem with Jeremy every week and left every session with a much better understanding of the topics covered in lecture and felt much more ready to do homework, practice problems, etc on my own. I gained a lot of confidence having Jeremy as a tutor which was really important over the course of these two classes which can often times make you feel defeated and discouraged. Using him as a tutor not only helped me earn higher grades in these courses but really helped me understand the concepts thoroughly and concretely which is critical for anyone taking the MCAT or pursuing other kinds of further education. Put simply, Jeremy rocks and will definitely help you survive organic chemistry!
Jeremy was a great tutor. That was willing to work around my needs and was very flexible with my schedule. Also, he was great at explaining things in a simplified and logical manner. I would not have been able to do as well as I did in Chem 3B without his help.
I would recommend Jeremy to everyone and their moms. He's amazing, truly passionate about what he does, he takes the time to explain concepts carefully. He goes above and beyond to help his students out, whether that means being flexible about scheduling times, coming to your location, answering emails with your remaining questions, and even looking at your exams to see if it were graded properly. He truly is a gem in the world of tutors. He actually made learning about ochem an enjoyable experience! He's an all around nice human being, very respectful, doesn't take himself too seriously, very easy going, and pretty much a genius (seriously, he's SO smart) when it comes to anything organic chemistry related. He never makes you feel stupid like other tutors are oh-so wonderful at doing. He will answer your every question thoroughly, whether it really is stupid or not. He is very down to earth and humble despite the immense extent of his knowledge on the subject. Plus, he repeated said "you're the boss" to me, so he gets brownie points for making me feel like a boss. Jokes aside, have Jeremy as your tutor and you won't be disappointed! Sure it's a little pricey, but at least you'll pass your class the first time around. ;)
Jeremy tutored me in Chem 3 B at Cal Spring semester 2013. He understood my learning style and was invaluable as a tutor. He was flexible and added additional sessions when I needed more help. I can't say enough positive things to recommend him as a tutor!!
I would highly recommend Jeremy as a tutor. He is by far the best tutor I have ever worked with. He is patient, smart, dedicated, responsive, kind, and flexible. We have been able to work together both on the phone and in person, and he is dedicated to helping me work through my ochem questions. He never makes me feel bad about asking silly or basic questions, and his dedication to helping me understand and work through the material is really wonderful. Every time I email him he responds within a few hours of the email and he is willing to commute to meet up with me. I had not taken organic chemistry in a few years and it is because of him that I am surviving the organic chemistry lab I am currently enrolled in. If you are thinking about working with a ochem tutor, definitely pick Jeremy, you will not regret it. Major kudos to him for being awesome.
Jeremy tutored me with my advanced organic chemistry courses. I HIGHLY recommend him as a tutor. He knows chemistry exceptionally well, and he is great at teaching complex concepts to a student. I earned A’s in my courses, and I am not sure I could have accomplished this without his help. Jeremy was always reasonable and fair when it came to scheduling. If I ever needed to cancel or reschedule I would give him at least 24 hours notice because that is what I would expect from him. If another student is displeased with Jeremy, I cannot believe that it is his fault. It seems to me that scheduling “pending online homework” is just another way of saying, “cancelling at the last minute”.
I've had quite a few tutors over the years and I can honestly say that Jeremy is the BEST yet. In my experience I've found that an excellent understanding of material, which Jeremy most certainly has, does not necessarily mean excellent tutoring. Jeremy exemplifies EXCELLENT tutoring by not only knowing how to do a problem the minute you open a page, which allows him to guide you through it from the beginning instead of leading you down the wrong path, but is also one of the kindest, most patient and most warmhearted people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He doesn't give you the answers immediately (which wouldn't do any good), but instead actually TEACHES you how to work through the problems and the type of questions you should be asking yourself as you try to figure them out, which is what really helps on exams. It's a great feeling to actually be able to understand and figure out the problems on your own, and Jeremy gets you to this point, with just the right amount of guidance along the way so that you don't get too frustrated. OChem became almost fun for my friend and I, a feat I thought near impossible! Not only is Jeremy an EXCELLENT tutor, but he is very flexible and understanding when it comes to scheduling - I was pretty flaky at times but he still does his very best to fit you in at a time that works best for you, even if it means his staying in the area until 11pm. To summarize: CHOOSE JEREMY as a tutor - it will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make.
I'll give him 3 stars because he deserves to be recognized for his strength in teaching the material. However, I would not recommend him because he quit on me unexpectedly just weeks before my final. We had an agreement to meet regularly for two hours during the week and, pending questions or homework help, on the weekend. Unfortunately Jeremy wrote me an unexpected email this weekend about no longer being my tutor. I called and tried to understand his rationale only to find him accusing me of dropping him at the last minute even though we agreed that weekend tutoring was pending online homework. To be fair, we have had to cancel a couple of sessions day-of due to conflicts in both schedules. However, if this was a problem or concern, then we should have sat down and discussed a new agreement. I recommend putting in writing when you'll meet, for how long, and at what rate.
