Renee S.
Private tutor in San Jose, CA
Education
Graduate student at the University of Michigan PhD in progress, Slavic Languages and Literatures, University of Michigan BA in English Literature and Russian Language, Illinois Wesleyan University
Experience
I have four years of experience teaching introductory/intermediate Russian language at the college level, as well as college-level writing courses for both freshmen and upperclassmen. Consultations and editing are services I can offer for college application essays and similar small tasks. I have also tutored reading and writing at elementary/high school levels for five years. I greatly enjoy teaching, and especially helping others approach learning with curiosity and enthusiasm. I think that learning is about pushing ourselves: whether we are studying a new language or strengthening a skill like reading or reasoning, true education necessitates breaking the boundaries of what we think we can do. It's hard work! But the rewards are endless. I graduated magna cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University, where I also earned the Donald R. Koehn Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities. While a student I studied in Russia, living in both St. Petersburg and Irkutsk. I have since continued my studies via the University of Michigan, where I have received grants to research and study in Russia and Israel. I'm now doing research and translating in the South Bay, based in San Jose.

Hobbies
I love to read! My mother is a children's librarian and keeps me up-to-date with popular series and technologies. There really is a lot to appreciate in "young adult" literature. I like to relax by cooking up a storm in the kitchen or taking my best canine friend on long walks.
