Private tutor in San Jose, CA
University of California, Los Angeles - BA, Sociology
I am a math tutor who is looking to work with students who are goal-oriented and results-driven. I have a bachelor's degree in Sociology from UCLA. My original career goal was to teach math, but I learned after my participation in the CalTeach program that I function much more effectively on a one-on-one basis with students. In the CalTeach program, I spent one day a week in Teaching Skills classes, and another day each week mentoring students in a seventh grade algebra class. As a mentor, I was available to help students who were having trouble with their classwork.I am shy, but friendly. I am a perfectionist, and I believe this lends itself to the teaching of math. There is an emphasis on repeating different types of problems until the pattern of the formula emerges. I strive foremost to ensure that the student is building an understanding of formulas and rules of mathematics. However, I understand that parents are very concerned with test scores, so test preparation is also an integral part of my teaching program. As I said, my original choice for a career was to be a math teacher, but I am very shy and cannot talk to large groups. That said, I am very thorough and love to help others to learn math.
